Mid-Maryland Ultra 50K and Relay – After an inch of snow fell the night before the race on 2/11/12, 106 ultra runners started the race as did 17 relay teams. The snow made the first 10k loop slippery but the second and third 10k loops become incredibly muddy and forced some to call it a day. Many continued smiling and had an amazing attitude as they put forth an extra special effort. Long sleeve finisher shirts were presented to the 79 ultra runners that completed the 50k. Uno’s from the Columbia Mall brought some great soup and pizza in the middle of the event – stop in there for a meal soon to show your support – and David’s Natural Market and Feet First continue to support Bullseye Running events. Gabriel Rodriguez, 7th at the USA Trail Marathon Championships a couple months ago, led for the first 10 miles or so then stepped of the course. Keith Levasseur assumed the lead and held it to the finish although Kjell Waals was adding pressure as he was close behind for the first 15 miles before slipping a few minutes back but he finished strong and remained in second. Serge Arbona finished third and was the first master and Christian Creutzer was 5th and the first grand master. The female race was led from start to finish by Issy Nelson from Rhode Island. Kristin Van Eron finished second and was the first master. Caroline Bauer was not far behind Kristin the whole way and finished third. Judith Weber finished was the 14th female and first grand master. The relay team of Oda, Burns, Morakinyo, Reynolds and Horrocks made up a big deficit on the last loop and won by 10 seconds. Keith and Issy have set the course records of 4:11:22 and 4:46:17 respectively. Runners from 12 states, including DC, were represented at the event! Congrats to all the runners and recover quickly!
